CLARIFICATION OF THE ROLE OF THE IMM GSM AND ADDITIONAL TUITION FROM INDEPENDENT PARTIES

The IMM Graduate School of Marketing (Pty) Ltd (“IMM GSM”) is registered as a distance learning private higher education institution (Registration Certificate No. 2000/HE07/013). Distance learning is regarded as the acquisition of knowledge and skills through mediated information and instruction, encompassing all technologies and other forms of learning at a distance.

As a distance learning education institution, the IMM GSM ensures that students are provided with all requirements for successful self-study (i.e. a Resource Pack, which includes a Learner Guide per module, a list of prescribed textbooks and DVDs (where applicable)). Online, telephone and e-mail support is available. General and module-specific tutorial letters, for certain modules, are made available during the course of every semester. A student may supplement his/her tuition at one of the recognised Additional Tuition Centres (“ATCs”). Spectrium – Graduate School of Business has received this recognition. In terms of Section 1 of the Higher Education Act, 1997 (Act No 101 of 1997) (“the Act”), to provide higher education is defined as the execution of the following functions in the institution’s own name:

Registering of students for higher education;

• Taking responsibility for the provision and delivery of the curricula;
• Taking responsibility for the assessment of students regarding their learning programmes; and
• Conferring the qualifications and issuing certificates for these qualifications.

In keeping with the Act, the IMM GSM complies with the above functions as the institution providing higher education. Spectrium – Graduate School of Business asserts that it does not perform these functions and acts solely as a supplier of additional tuition to students who voluntarily elect to receive such support and is not a site of delivery for the IMM GSM.
